Ao abrigo de uma Bolsa Fulbright para Investigação com o apoio da FCT e no âmbito do seu doutoramento em ‘Metabolism-Clinical and Experimental’ na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, André Sousa desenvolveu parte da sua pesquisa sobre “prostate cancer” na University of Pittsburgh, PA, EUA.

«Beyond the scientific outcomes, this fellowship offered me an extraordinary cultural experience that I will carry with me for life. During my stay, I had the opportunity to explore some of the most iconic landscapes of the United States, visiting national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone. These experiences provided a unique connection with nature and a deeper appreciation of the country’s natural heritage.
I was also able to travel through major American cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and New Orleans, as well as undertake an unforgettable road trip across the entire southern region of the United States. These journeys allowed me to discover the incredible diversity of American culture, history, and traditions in a way that no classroom or laboratory could provide.
Being in the laboratory itself was also an extremely rewarding part of the experience. The atmosphere was consistently supportive and collaborative, and I was encouraged to engage in multiple projects beyond my main research focus. This open environment gave me the chance to expand my technical knowledge, exchange ideas with colleagues, and develop new skills, which enriched my scientific training while strengthening my confidence as a researcher.
At the university, I engaged actively in campus life by joining student sports clubs and participating in board game associations, which gave me the chance to interact with peers in a relaxed and inclusive environment. I also joined the university orchestra as a flutist, where I had the honor of performing as a soloist. Music created a powerful bridge between cultures and became one of the most enriching parts of my stay.
Equally important was the human dimension of this experience. I built friendships not only with American students but also with other international scholars from the Fulbright program and beyond. I also had the chance to reconnect with Portuguese colleagues abroad, creating a sense of community and shared identity in a foreign country.
This unique blend of cultural exploration, academic involvement, and human connection transformed the fellowship into the most remarkable period of my life. It allowed me to grow personally and culturally, broadening my perspective and strengthening bonds that I will carry with me long after the program has ended.»
