On September 18, 2026, the Fulbright Commission renewed its partnership with the Universidade Politécnica de Portalegre (UPP) for the continuation of the Fulbright Award in Computer Science / Portalegre Polytechnic University.
Representing the Commission was Otília Macedo Reis, Executive Director. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Portalegre Polytechnic University (UPP) by its Vice-Rector, Fernando Rebola.
The signing of this MoU provided an excellent opportunity to present Fulbright award opportunities to UPP’s academic community, especially to Portalegre’s students and academics interested in developing their study or post-doctoral research projects in the United States, and to faculty interested in hosting US counterparts under the Fulbright Program.
In 2023, the Fulbright Commission Portugal and UPP established this partnership under the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, which enables U.S. academics and researchers to collaborate with UPP in teaching and research projects in Information Science and Systems.
This partnership is responsible for the presence during the academic year of Fulbright U.S. Scholar Stefan Brandle (Computer Science, Taylor University), who is visiting the University during the fall of 2026, as well as for building deeper academic, scientific, and technical ties between Portugal and the United States, ties that help raise the profile of research institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Commission values the continuation of this partnership with Portalegre Polytechnic University, which sustains a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award. The commitment of partners such as UPP is fundamental to the Fulbright Commission’s ability to establish awards for American professors and researchers, both through the support and affiliation they provide to Fulbrighters and through their alignment with fields and projects considered priorities by both parties.
