On April 9, 2026, the Fulbright Commission renewed its partnership with IPMA, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere for the continuation of the Fulbright Award Atlantic for Future / IPMA – Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere. Representing the Commission were Marie Blanchard, Chair of the Board of Directors, and Otília Macedo Reis, Executive Director. The agreement was signed on behalf of IPMA by its President, José Ângelo Guerreiro da Silva.
In 2016, the Fulbright Commission Portugal and IPMA established this partnership under the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program that enables U.S. academics and researchers to collaborate with IPMA on innovative research in marine resources and environmental sciences.
Since the partnership’s inception, six scholars in fields such as marine resources, oceanography, geology, and geophysics have developed projects that contribute to scientific exchange – particularly in marine sciences – as well as to the development and strengthening of academic, scientific, and technical collaboration between Portugal and the United States. These efforts support research that informs policy, advances environmental protection, and enhances the global visibility of scientific institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Commission welcomes the continuation of its partnership with IPMA, which supports the Fulbright Award Atlantic for Future. For the Fulbright Commission, it is essential to rely on the commitment of partners such as IPMA in establishing Fulbright awards for American professors and researchers, both for the support and affiliation they provide to Fulbrighters and for their focus on fields and projects considered priorities by both parties.
