João has been specializing in theoretical condensed matter physics, namely in the many-body physics of two-dimensional systems, on its interface with the burgeoning field of Quantum Information and Technologies. Though his background is in solid-state systems (e.g. graphene), this experience has provided the good tools, both technical and conceptual, to tackle the physical systems approached in João’s PhD: mixtures of ultra cold atoms confined to two dimensions, including phases of matter such as Bose- Einstein condensation. The end-goal is to make use of these physical systems to develop novel platforms for quantum information.
