Afonso is a PhD student from the University of Lisbon whose work plan focuses on how phytoplankton communities in the Antarctic Peninsula have changed over the past 20 years and how they respond to climate change. During his visit to Rutgers University, he will study the link between the dynamics of phytoplankton communities and CO2 fluxes in the Southern Ocean, a region which is responsible for over 30% of the global carbon sequestration. To this end, he will use field and satellite data to quantify the contribution of diatoms to CO2 uptake and how their contribution has been affected by global warming and its consequences in polar regions.
