Andreia Maia’s Ph.D. main objective is to develop an immunotherapy approach based on Natural Killer (NK) cells. NK cells are cytotoxic immune cells which have shown the ability to recognize malignant cells. The student will isolate NK cells from human blood and solid tumors, expanding them and improving their cytotoxicity in vitro. The collaboration with Dr. Romee at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute-Harvard Medical School will allow Andreia to genetically construct a NK cell with improved targeting and cytotoxic capacities against tumor cells.
