Jocelyn Wilkins, Fulbright/FLAD US Student, 2020/2021, at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto shares her experience volunteering at the UMBC/FEUP Global Engineering Course, in the context of a global pandemic.

University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) Global Engineering Course, Fall 2020

The idea behind this course is that UMBC students collaborate with FEUP students to approach global engineering challenges. More importantly, students learn to solve problems from a global perspective and better understand cultures different from their own. From this course, I formed international relationships with both students and professors.

This course was a significant catalyst in my decision to apply for a Fulbright award. Upon my arrival at FEUP, I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to volunteer as an assistant in the Global engineering course. Although the class was largely virtual, I worked to make the experience equally enjoyable for the students as my own experience last fall. As an assistant, I provided feedback on academic assignments and engineering challenges. Additionally, and more importantly, FEUP students and I learned about each other’s cultures and worked to understand each other from these newly discovered perspectives.

This experience was rewarding for the students and me and helped me form lasting connections at FEUP and Portugal.
