«My name is Flavia Martins. I am a PhD student at i3S-Institute for Research & Innovation in Health from the Biomedicine Programme- Faculty of Medicine from University of Porto. I was awarded a Fulbright scholarship with the support of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) to go to Chicago and work at Northwestern University.

Looking back on my experience, I still can’t believe how quickly the six months flew by. The Fulbright program exceeded all my expectations and was truly an incredible opportunity for me both professionally and personally. Working with a diverse and multidisciplinary team at Northwestern allowed me to gain a new perspective on science and life in general. I was able to learn new techniques and engage in meaningful discussions with people from different backgrounds, which helped me to advance my PhD research significantly. Moreover, the people I worked with were incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I felt like part of a family.

On a personal level, I had the chance to meet many wonderful people who shared their culture with me and allowed me to share mine. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was able to form close bonds with my colleagues and friends, and I know that I will cherish these relationships for a lifetime.

I also want to express my gratitude to the Fulbright Chicago Chapter for organizing events that brought together Fulbright scholars from around the world. These events allowed me to connect with other like-minded individuals and learn from their experiences.

Overall, I will always be grateful to Fulbright for providing me with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.»

Thank you, Flávia, for being part of this wide and friendly community, welcome back!
