“It is impossible for me to sum up the impact of my experience as Fulbrighter in Portugal in just a few words, nor, how my time there changed my perspective. I think the picture, however begins to do so. This is a picture of where Portugal supposedly began as a nation. I saw the old and the new and differences in music, food, lifestyle, transportation, shopping, and education of course. I also saw how Portugal and the US are similar. I experienced being immersed in the culture and trying to navigate my way around when I did not have a good grasp of the language. I now understand better how international students and scholars feel when they visit the US. I experienced kindness, frustration at times, great beauty and learned the importance of “FUTBALL”! It was such a wonderful experience that I am taking a group of my graduate students back with me next March. While there I had the chance to travel to Ireland, Gibraltar, Spain and Madeira and all around Portugal. What a wonderful and awakening experience it was.”
