Francisco Almeida

Francisco Almeida is PhD student in the Mechanisms of Memory and Alzheimer’s Disease group at the University of Minho and a Neuroradiology resident at Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto. His research focuses on understanding how the biological basis of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to shed light on the pathophysiological mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease, exploring new pathways to biomarker development in clinical practice. With the Fulbright, he will explore lipid signaling and MRI determinants of myelin turnover in the laboratory of Profesor Jia Guo at Columbia University in New York. This research project will link lipidomics and high-field MRI with potential translational implications for a range of neurodegenerative diseases.

Maria Vale

Maria Vale is a PhD student in Applied Psychology at the Psychology Research Centre, School of Psychology, University of Minho. Her research project focuses on technology-facilitated dating abuse among adolescents. As a Visiting Student Researcher, Maria will have the opportunity to collaborate with Professor Denise Hines at the Department of Social Work, College of Public Health, George Mason University, Virginia. She hopes to provide new insights into the role of bystanders in technology facilitated sexual abuse, specifically focusing on adolescents who witnessed such incidents (factors that either facilitate or act as barriers to their intervention) and those who did not (predictors of their intention to intervene on behalf of the victim in the future). The outcomes of this collaboration will contribute to improving prevention and intervention strategies in this field.

Miguel Correia

Miguel Correia is a Biochemistry Master’s student at the Faculty of Sciences and School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto. The student will develop part of his master’s thesis at Buck Institute for Research on Aging, California, where he will have the opportunity to learn new, advanced research techniques and methodologies. This project will focus on furthering our understanding of cellular aging by investigating the molecular mechanisms linking actin cytoskeleton dynamics, organelle inheritance and protein quality control. Beyond establishing mechanistic links, this project aims to make effective contributions to the development of novel therapeutic approaches for age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and cancer.

Pedro Monteiro is a master’s student in Rehabilitation and Mental Health at the School of Health, Polytechnic University of Porto, where he graduated in Occupational Therapy and collaborates as an Invited Assistant Professor. Beatriz Mamede is a Master’s student in Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra and holds a bachelor’s in law from the University of Lisbon. Carolina do Carmo is a researcher in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering. Ana Isabel Roque

Ana Isabel Roque is currently undertaking her PhD in Biology at NOVA School of Science and Technology and Center for Innovative Care and Health Technology, Polytechnic of Leiria. Her research is focused on unraveling celiac disease’s autoimmunity mechanisms possibly mediated by bacteria. As a Visiting Student Researcher at Professor Fasano’s laboratory at the Mucosal Immunology and Biology Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, Harvard Medical School, and supported by the Fulbright Program, she plans to employ an intestinal organoid-bacteria co-culture model to infer if commensal bacteria can disrupt and translocate the intestinal epithelial barrier and contribute to the autoimmune response observed in celiac patients. She hopes to provide new insights into specific host-bacteria interactions and their influence on host responses to environmental disease triggers that may enable the discovery of pathogenic targets and development of new therapeutic or preventive approaches.

André Governo is a third-year PhD candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. His research forms an integral part of the “WAVEBUOY” project, which aims to develop an innovative wave-powered converter for sustained oceanographic measurements offshore the Azores archipelago. It focuses on advanced numerical modelling and study of the buoy hydrodynamics and moorings under extreme wave conditions. As a highly multidisciplinary project, the scientific collaboration during his stay in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is essential, particularly considering the converter’s unique demands compared to traditional grid-powered counterparts. This partnership prioritizes two main objectives: designing the mooring system, and optimizing the current WAVEBUOY prototype, thus contributing to sustainable energy generation technology based on ocean resources.

Beatriz Matriz

Beatriz Mariz is a PhD student in Biology at the School of Sciences and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon. Her project aims to unravel the role of specific Streptococcus pneumoniae proteins in pathogenicity and bacterial infection. This bacterium is a leading cause of diverse infections, and it is recognized as a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization. To further her research, Beatriz will embark as a Visiting Student Researcher at the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. During this period, she intends to clarify the relationship between the composition of the pneumococcal membrane and the production of S. pneumoniae extracellular vesicles (pEVs). By integrating established techniques for vesicle isolation and characterization with functional assays, she aims to shed light on how pEVs influence critical factors such as biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, and host immune responses.

Delfina Fernandes is a PhD student of Psychology from the University of Minho, supported by a FCT fellowship. Her research project investigates national and international procedures for collecting the testimony of child and adolescent victims of sexual crimes. As a Visiting Student Researcher at the Long Beach Trauma Recovery Center at California State University-Long Beach, she plans to deepen her knowledge on the direct provision of evidence-based trauma services to victims of crime and how institutions must create a supportive and sensitive environment for this population. Specializing in Evidence Synthesis and Health Technology Assessment, Joana’s work focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of Bayesian bias-adjusted meta-analytical models in mitigating biases in meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials. With the unparalleled support of the Fulbright Commission, Joana will join Professor John Ioannidis’s team at the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford University (METRICS). During her visit, she will compare the strategy of bias-adjustment with the conventional approach of restricting meta-analysis to trials with a low risk of bias. Maria das Neves Gomes is an FCT doctoral researcher at the Centre for Classical Studies of the University of Lisbon. Her PhD is an interdisciplinary project rooted both in Classical and Slavic studies, focusing on classical reception in Russian poetry of the early twentieth century. As a Visiting Student Researcher at the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of Princeton University, she will work with her co-adviser and access top-tier resources to conduct research on Slavic studies, among which the personal archives of one of the poets she studies. She will investigate how a selection of modern Russian poets used Classical motives to conceptualize their identities, within a social context where the relationship with the Classics continued to be forcefully reshaped to fit political agendas. This touches on the complex issues of Slavic (and Classical) identities, historically in perpetual redefinition and conflict with the West.

Nelson Descalço

Nelson Descalço is a medical doctor, currently a Psychiatry resident, and a PhD student at the Neuropsychiatry Unit at Champalimaud Foundation, supported by an FCT scholarship. He is a student of the Health Sciences Doctoral Program at NOVA Medical School and an invited lecturer in Neuroscience at the same institution. Nelson is currently working on characterizing the white matter structure of the brain in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder using neuroimaging methods. Mauro Barbosa Franqueira is starting his PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida, delving into spacecraft dynamics exploration and exploitation. With a keen focus on Advanced Guidance, Navigation, Control, and Autonomy (GNCA) space applications, Franqueira’s research primarily centers on two pivotal domains: i) Rendezvous, Proximity Operations, and Docking, where he investigates the intricacies of satellites flying within 500 km of each other, probing the challenges and opportunities inherent in such close proximity. ii) Franqueira is also deeply engaged in trajectory optimization and space mission planning, aiming to refine methodologies for more efficient and effective space exploration endeavors. Through his doctoral journey and with the support of Fullbright, Mauro aims to enhance the precision and safety of spacecraft maneuvers and to innovate in the strategic planning of space missions, contributing to the broader field of aerospace engineering with cutting-edge research.

Bernado Bagulho

Bernardo Bagulho is a designer and artist, born in 1995, in the city of Évora. He has a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration from the University of Évora and the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto. He also attended an Illustration program at the EINA Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 2022, he made the Continuing Education Program, Illustration Summer Residency, at the School of Visual Arts, U.S. Bernardo has collaborated with national and international publications, with a greater focus on developing graphic projects and carrying out work in the areas of illustration, product design, printing techniques and animation. His affinity with the region and imagery of the Alentejo is undeniable. He has worked the image of local cultural activities, “Pedras Rolantes”, public art, or the Évora International Puppet Biennial, which are some of the most notable projects. His collaborations include also The New York Times, Okavango | Wilderness Project, National Geographic, Wildbird Trust, La Maleta de Portnou magazine, Sem Termo Filmes, Cendrev – Teatro Garcia de Resende, Instituto Camões, Arizona State University, SVA, among others. Annarita Gori

Annarita Gori, PhD from University of Siena, is currently a Research Fellow at Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon. She was a Visiting Scholar at New York University and at Sciences Po, Paris, in 2015 and 2016, and in 2020 she received the FLAD/Brown Visiting Professorship. Her research focuses on right-wing regimes, cultural diplomacy, visual propaganda, political exhibitions, intellectual networks. At the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, Annarita will explore the cultural relationships between Portugal and the United States during the early Cold War era. Specifically, she will analyze how the Estado Novo rebranded its image by emphasizing Christianity, anticommunism, and tranquility to align with the Truman Doctrine values, thereby securing its position amidst the complex context of NATO’s consolidation and the bipolar world order’s emergence. Additionally, researching at the Portuguese-American Ferreira Mendes Archives will allow her to study the reactions and involvement of the Portuguese-American community in this transformative process.

Emanuel Gonçalves

Emanuel Gonçalves is an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, and Integrated Researcher at INESC-ID, and obtained his PhD degree from the University of Cambridge with work performed at EMBL-EBI. His main interests fall under the areas of Bioinformatics and Machine Learning applied to Cancer Research. During his stay at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, he will work with Dr. John Doench developing novel combinatorial base-editing CRISPR screens. This project aims to identify synergistic genetic interactions that contribute to drug resistance, ultimately uncovering mechanisms that could be targeted for new treatments.

Luís Cruz

Luís Cruz is an economist and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra. He is also a researcher at the Centre for Economics and Business Research and an active member of the Energy for Sustainability Initiative. His research interests include the modelling and analysis of environmental and socio-economic interactions, as well as impacts estimation at local, (inter-)regional and/or country levels, with a policy-oriented focus.

During his research stay at the University of Virginia, in the Spring semester 2025, Luís Cruz will have the opportunity to work with the members of the Center for Economic and Policy Studies at UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, whose major areas of work include local and regional economic assessment in the framework of the Energy Transition Initiative. Such context provides an excellent platform to delve into renewable energy integration across diverse geographic territories, regional economic modeling, and the development of economic impact databases.

Ricardo Miguel Godinho

Ricardo Miguel Godinho is a Junior Researcher at ICArEHB, University of Algarve, where he currently heads the FCT R&D project ParaFunction and co-coordinates the Osteoarchaeology Laboratory. As a broadly trained anthropologist, he is interested in understanding how we, humans, evolve and adapt to our surrounding environments, both culturally and biologically. In that context he has focused particularly on the evolution of the human skull, combining conventional and virtual anthropology methods. During his 3 months visit to the State University of New York at Buffalo he will examine the extent to which mandible form is impacted by population history and by other factors. To that end, he will collaborate with Prof. Noreen von Cramon-Taubadel to examine the congruence between mandibular morphological variance and neutral evolutionary models.
