The Directorate-General for the Higher Education (DGES – Direcção-Geral do Ensino Superior) is one, along with the public universities, of the competent bodies that confer recognition to U.S. higher education academic degrees, namely, Bachelor, Master and Ph.D., in Portugal.

The process of recognition is simple and fast. The DGES accepts submission of the Diploma and Transcript written in English (no need for a translation) and after a payment of a fee, they will recognize the academic degree in less than one month. Recognition is exclusively given to institutions that are accredited by one of the CHEA or the Department of Education recognized accrediting agencies.
