Ricardo Vasconcelos is a Professor of Portuguese at San Diego State University, in California. His research focuses on the links between Portuguese modern and contemporary literature and national identity, and he has also published widely on the relations between Lusophone modernisms and international avant-gardes. His work combines approaches from both literary criticism and textual scholarship, often bringing to light and establishing previously-unknown texts. Ricardo Vasconcelos’s studies and editions of Portuguese literature have been released in multiple countries, including the USA, the UK, Portugal, Brazil, Colombia and Germany. His Fulbright project, “Beyond ‘Junk’: Re-descriptions of Portuguese National Identity in a Time of Financial Crisis (2011/2015),” studies the cultural and artistic response (literature, music, cinema and street art) to the financial and economic turmoil in Portugal between 2011 and 2015. Prior to the Fulbright US Scholar Award, Vasconcelos’s research and teaching has been supported by several grants from institutions such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Luso-American Foundation for Development, the Camões Institute, or the Direção-Geral do Livro e da Biblioteca (Portuguese Ministry of Culture).
