Can carbon and nitrogen linkage patterns reveal the origins of atmospheric organic aerosols? This is Professor Regina Duarte’s question. Her present research aims at applying a systematic advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance approach to generate unique structural information on Atmospheric organic aerosols (OAs) for the first time. Potentially transformative aspects include: 1) unravel the structural features of carbon and nitrogen linkages using advanced spectral-editing methods; and 2) assess how nitrogen is incorporated in the OAs matrix, aiming to clarify the origin of atmospheric OAs.
