Zoe A. Arnaut, a 3rd-year PhD student at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, investigates porphyrins for microorganism inactivation. She works on the synthesis of photosensitizers capable of targeting Zika, Dengue, SARS-CoV-2 viruses, and pneumococcal pneumonia bacteria prevalent in hospital pneumonia cases. During her stay at Texas A&M, she will focus on the formulation and assessment of nebulized solutions for in vitro treatments of pneumococcal pneumonia. This research aims to establish a protocol for photodynamic inactivation for pneumonia treatment, advancing knowledge on pneumonia therapy options to face antimicrobial resistance challenges
