Rui Mota is a Ph.D. student at the Institute for Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR) of the University of the Azores. His research focuses on developing optical and thermal satellite remote sensing-based approaches for monitoring volcanic clouds. As a Visiting Student Researcher at the US Geological Survey (USGS), he will collaborate with teams from the Cascades Volcano Observatory and the Alaska Volcano Observatory, receiving training on the acquisition and use of satellite data and ground-based remote sensing equipment; on the development of ash retrieval methods; and ash dispersion and deposition modeling. Ultimately, this experience will improve his remote sensing background for better monitoring volcanic clouds within his Ph.D. project.
