Ana Mesias is a Biomedical Engineering Master’s student at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University. She will develop part of her master’s thesis, entitled “Bio-peptides with neuroprotective and neuromodulator potential upon brain disorders”, at Stanford University. The project aims to develop a bio-based drug, using two different natural and sustainable protein sources (algae and insects) to prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. Besides tackling an important mental health issue, her research promotes the re-use and valorization of abundant alternative protein sources for pharmaceutical and food industry, contributing in an economically sustainable way to improve knowledge and support the progress of biomedical sciences.
