Jessica da Silva studies diabetic foot ulceration (DFU), a complication of diabetes often requiring prolonged hospitalizations and amputations. The student’s aim is to develop and validate a polymeric delivery system capable of controlled and sustained release of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) for treating DFU complications. Jessica and the team she will be working with will design and characterize an alginate-chitosan hydrogel for controlled release of AMPs and test its efficacy and safety in in vitro and in vivo models for infection control and wound healing. Jessica wishes to contribute to the development of novel therapeutic strategies for treating DFU complications.
