Fulbright Portugal Matching Gift Challenge Campaign
Donor and Challenge – Mr. Curtis Stewart, the outgoing chair of the Board of Directors of the Fulbright Commission Portugal, has generously agreed to donate an amount of up to $7,500 as a parting gift to the Fulbright Program in Portugal, to be used to increase the number of Fulbright Grants awarded to Portuguese and American Students, Researchers and Scholars.
Mr. Curtis said that “As a member of the board of the Fulbright commission, I have had the opportunity to review a large number of applications for grants and scholarships. I have always been impressed with the high quality of the applicants and the research being done in Portugal. Fulbright has been able to award many grants, but it is frustrating when budget limitations means deserving, high-quality proposals are turned down. I hope that this contribution will allow for more collaboration between Portuguese and American scholars and institutions” and encouraged others to follow his example by setting a matching gift challenge.
Goal – With that challenge in mind, the Fulbright Commission would like to raise up to $7.500 for Grants for Portuguese and American Students, Researchers and Scholars.
The challenge will take place in March 2018, the month of 58th anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Portugal.
All donations, small or large, will add up to the matching challenge!
Examples of high-quality projects of pre-selected applicants that may end up being funded if the matching gift challenge goal is met include:
- A Portuguese scholar’s six-month project in California, in the field of Geophysics and Seismology, focused on Integrating Functional Data Analysis in Stochastic Seismic Inversion;
- A US researcher’s eight-month project in Lisbon, focused on assessing the social, cultural and political factors that led to Portugal’s Drug Policy success.
