David de Sousa Vale, Universidade de Lisboa, University of California-Berkeley, Transportation

David will be developing a project that has the objective of overcoming two major shortcomings of accessibility measurement, essential to promote planning for accessibility and associated sustainable urban mobility:

a) Explicitly include cost as a variable in the measurement of accessibility, as speed comes at a cost, and not everyone can pay to travel at a certain speed;

b) Consider different travel modes as complementary to each other and not only as competitors, and reflect this complementary in the measurement of accessibility, in order to understand what can constitute a real alternative to car travelling when considering door-to-door travel.
