U.S. Scholar Program – Fulbright Award in Open Ocean Ecology / CCMar/UAlg – Algarve Center for Marine Sciences

Degree requirements: Candidates must have completed a Ph.D., or other terminal degree.
Disciplines: Only applications in Environmental Sciences will be considered.

Language proficiency: All activity will be in English; additional language proficiency is not required.
Grant duration and period
Three months, starting dates are flexible: preferred starting months are September or February, as agreed with the Portuguese host institution.

Grant activity: Teaching / Research
The scholar will be introduced individually to the researchers of CCMar during the first week of the stay and will broadly introduce their research during a seminar open to all students of the University of Algarve within a fortnight after arrival.
The scholar is expected to use the potential of CCMar (environment, location, facilities, human resources) to develop an original interdisciplinary research project with one/several researchers of CCMar, aiming for concrete outputs (e.g. scientific article, policy recommendation). The project can be based on existing data or on newly produced data and could be prepared before the stay.
In addition, the scholar will teach a course in her/his discipline at the University of Algarve in the Master programs in Marine Biology, Marine and Coastal Systems, and Aquaculture and Fisheries and/or in the doctoral programs Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation – Erasmus Mundus and Marine, Earth and Environmental Science for an equivalent of 48 hours contact time.
These programs will offer possibility for the scholar to engage into supervision and mentoring of students of the University of Algarve.
Letter of invitation: A letter of invitation is strongly preferred. The invitation letter should describe the grant activity and dates of stay.
Travel allowance: €1,100 (for scholar only; includes only flights)
Funding for dependents: €750 for one or two dependents; €1,200 for three or more dependents (must accompany the scholar for at least 80 percent of the grant period).
Health and accidents insurance: Accidents and Sickness Plan for Exchanges (ASPE).
Other: The University of Algarve offers free accommodation in recently refurbished apartments in the center of Faro and close to campus.
The scholar will be given space and facilities to work in the best conditions, with all required commodities (air-conditioned office, high-speed wireless internet, access to online-library, access to experimental facilities, proximity to the sea, mentoring if requested) and a lively scientific environment.
Assistance for secretarial needs and settlement will be provided by the international office of CCMar.
