The Fulbright Study / Research Program is designed to give U.S. citizens opportunities for personal development through educational and cultural exchange. Nearly 200 Americans have studied in Portugal through Fulbright Portugal.


Candidate profile

Applications are welcome from candidates at all degree levels who have completed a Bachelor’s degree before the start date of the grant.

All fields of study are considered.

Applicants living in Portugal at the time of the application are not eligible for consideration.


Language Proficiency

Language proficiency in Portuguese, commensurate with the proposed study, is necessary by the beginning date of the grant.


Grant duration and period

8 months, October through May.

Grantees are required to attend a mandatory on-site orientation in Lisbon, in late September, before the beginning of their grant.


Grant activity and affiliation

Projects may include university coursework, scientific research in a research center, independent library or field research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, or a combination of these.

Candidates are responsible for arranging their own host affiliations and must submit letters of invitation/affiliation with their applications.

Fulbright grantees may register as special students, and thus be able to attend courses relevant to their projects but are responsible for the payment of any tuition fees associated.

Award benefits

Monthly stipend: €1,250.

Travel allowance, for student only: €850 (flights only).

Health and Accidents Insurance: Accidents and Sickness Plan for Exchanges (ASPE).

Tuition fees are not covered by the grant benefits.

No housing or dependents allowance are available.
