The Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees can lecture and research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

 

Candidate Profile

Category: U.S. Scholar Program.

This award is open to academics and appropriately qualified professionals outside of academia.

Degree Requirements: Candidates must have completed a Ph.D., or other terminal degree.

Disciplines: Only applications in Environmental Sciences will be considered.

Specializations: Marine Ecology; Open Ocean Ecology.

Language Proficiency: All activity will be in English; additional language proficiency is not required.

 

Grant Duration and Period

Grant Duration: Three months.

Grant Period: Grant dates are flexible; preferred starting months are September 2020 or February 2021, as agreed with the Portuguese host institution.

 

Grant Activity and Affiliation

Grant activity: Teaching / Research

The scholar will be introduced individually to the researchers of CCMar during the first week of the stay and will broadly introduce their research during a seminar open to all students of the University of Algarve within a fortnight after arrival.

The scholar is expected to use the potential of CCMar (environment, location, facilities, human resources) to develop an original interdisciplinary research project with one/several researchers of CCMar, aiming for concrete outputs (e.g. scientific article, policy recommendation). The project can be based on existing data or on newly produced data and could be prepared before the stay.

In addition, the scholar will teach a course in her/his discipline at the University of Algarve in the Master programs in Marine Biology, Marine and Coastal Systems, and Aquaculture and Fisheries and/or in the doctoral programs Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation – Erasmus Mundus and Marine, Earth and Environmental Science for an equivalent of 48 hours contact time.

These programs will offer possibility for the scholar to engage into supervision and mentoring of students of the University of Algarve.

Grant Location: Universidade do Algarve, Centro do Ciencias do Mar, Faro, Portugal.

Letter of Invitation: A letter of invitation is strongly preferred. The invitation letter should describe the grant activity and proposed timeline.

 

Award Benefits

Stipend: Maintenance allowance of €8,400 (corresponding to 3 monthly allowances of €2,800).

Travel: The Fulbright Commission offers a one-time payment travel allowance, intended as a contribution to international travel between the U.S.A. and Portugal:

  • Travel allowance of €1,100, for scholar;
  • Travel allowance of €1,100, for each dependent travelling with the scholar (round trip travel receipts are mandatory).

Dependents: The Fulbright Commission offers additional funding for dependents who stay with the scholar during the entire period of the grant:

  • A monthly maintenance allowance of €250 per dependent;
  • A monthly tuition allowance of €500 per child, when attending a private school (proof of enrollment is mandatory);
  • A one-time payment allowance of €300 per dependent, to cover for Portuguese language and culture classes (proof of enrollment is mandatory).

Insurance: Accidents and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE).

Housing: The University of Algarve offers free accommodation in recently refurbished apartments in the center of Faro and close to campus.

Other: The scholar will be given space and facilities to work in the best conditions, with all required commodities (air-conditioned office, high-speed wireless internet, access to online-library, access to experimental facilities, proximity to the sea, mentoring if requested) and a lively scientific environment.

Assistance for secretarial needs and settlement will be provided by the International Office of CCMar.
